In the Bolsón de Mapimí desert of Durango, Mexico lies a mysterious 50-kilometer expanse known as "La Zona del Silencio." Within its boundaries, shortwave radio signals cannot be transmitted, compass needles spin erratically, and television broadcasts dissolve into static.

The Athena Missile Incident (1970)

The site gained international attention in July 1970 when a US Air Force test rocket carrying radioactive Cobalt-57 launched from Utah off-course by thousands of miles, crashing directly into the center of the Zone of Silence. Air Force recovery teams spent weeks searching for the wreckage, discovering peculiar subterranean magnetic deposits that distorted radar tracking.

Uranium & Magnetite Minerals

Geological surveys show high concentrations of magnetite and uranium ore in the regional soil, which creates local magnetic field anomalies capable of interfering with low-frequency radio waves and electronic navigation gear.
